To the Editor: I’m sorry that James Schembari didn’t see the aurora borealis from his igloo in Finland (“A Bed Under Glass in the Land of the Aurora,” Jan. 18), but he should try again in about three years. The auroras are caused by particles ejected from the sun, and they are linked to the sunspot cycle. Sunspots have been absent on the sun for over a year, with rare exception, to the point where we solar astronomers are beginning to wonder if they will ever start up again. Odds are, though, that in about three years we will be halfway toward the next maximum of the cycle and that auroras will be plentiful.
